CSR, or Corporate Social Responsibility in India has transitioned from being a mandate to now being used as a bridge for the corporate sector to fulfill its mission of investing in the transformation of communities. However, while CSR may be conducted in the boardroom, the actual impact of CSR has to do with what is actually happening on the ground (in the community), as it is the grassroots NGOs that are turning these funds into dignity, opportunity, and hope for those in their communities.
NGOs working at the grassroots level operate in a community where every single rupee is valuable. When corporates properly channel their resources through supporting grassroots-level NGOs to carry out work, they not only support programmes but support changing the future of many lives by providing young people with access to education who have never stepped foot into a school, change the lives of people who have been provided with health care to those who may not have access to any previous health care, and develop livelihoods for those without work.
In this positive scenario, however, there is a huge disconnect still.
Many corporates want to contribute and many good NGOs that work at the grassroots level are anxious to be found and supported.
What Do Grassroots NGOs Provide?
Grassroots NGOs become part of the community. They provide:
However, they do not have relationships with many large corporate funds and must rely on individual donors' and philanthropists for their support and funds.
The Sam and Jane Foundations
The Sam and Jane Foundations work to generate sustainable change in underprivileged communities. Until now we have not received any funding from CSR. All projects are based on contributions from individual donors, and a strong belief in impact.
This is how the impact looks like on the ground:
Circle of Hope - Community Development
Access to sanitation is a basic right for all people. By our Circle of Hope Initiative, we have facilitated the construction of 121 toilets for underprivileged families, which has positively impacted the health, hygiene and safety of people, particularly women and children.
Nourish Hope - HIV Orphans Project
Children affected by HIV are often subject to stigma, malnutrition and lack of parental care. Through our Nourish Hope project we provide:
Home of Hope - Street Children Project
Street children are amongst the most vulnerable children. Our Home of Hope project provides shelter, an education and a vocational path for each child.
Our Vision is to assist each child to move from "Surviving" to "Self-Reliance & Dignity".
Rise of Hope - Women Empowerment Project
Empowered Women create empowered Communities. Through Rise of Hope we support women by providing:
The Importance of This for CSR Advocates
CSR can be effective when applied to Organizations that meet these three criteria:
The Sam and Jane Foundation is at this intersection – ready to grow, partner and provide greater reach, if supported by the right corporations through the right CSR partnerships.

CSR is most powerful when it reaches the grassroots.
Across India, small NGOs are transforming lives with limited resources—turning intent into real impact. At Sam and Jane Foundation, we’ve been driving change without CSR funding so far, powered purely by individual donors and community support.
From building 121 toilets under Circle of Hope, to supporting HIV-affected children through Nourish Hope, caring for street children via Home of Hope, and enabling women empowerment through Rise of Hope—our journey reflects what committed grassroots action can achieve.
We are now looking to connect with CSR leaders, ESG professionals, and impact-driven organizations to scale this work further.
Let’s collaborate to create sustainable change where it matters most.
Working towards betterment such that everyone should have education, better health and support for old age
